Rest. We're designed for it. We need it.

Rest is woven into the fabric of creation. It's there right at the beginning. It gets as much real estate in Genesis 1 as the creation of light and darkness. It's a big deal (Genesis 1)

When God leads the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, this idea of rest being a fundamental part of humanity flies to the fore again (Exodus 31:12-17). God is pretty clear when he tells Israel, through Moses, how to live. Honour the Sabbath or be put to death. Rest, or be put to death. A stark contrast from the world the Israelites had just come from where every ounce of work was squeezed out of them. Now, rest is not an option.

God gives people a model for resting. It's pretty simple. One day in seven, rest. It's tempting to think that the Sabbath is built for God. We can slip into thinking that he needs us to spend the day focussing on him. He doesn't though, and that's not what the Sabbath is about. The Sabbath is for us (Mark 2:23-27). Maybe the Sabbath is a tool to help us to rest.

But what does is mean to rest? How do we do it? Why do we do it?

There are a lot of references to rest and/or Sabbath in the bible. These are three I've picked up on in the talk: Genesis 1, Exodus 31:12-17, Mark 2:23-27.
